إن أهم ما يتميز به الإنسان عن سائر المخلوقات هو العقل البشري وما يتميز به من قدرات غير محدودة على التفكير والتحليل والإنتاج المعرفي، ولاستغلال هذه القدرات وتوظيفها في سبيل التطور ورفعة البشرية لا بد من استخدام العقل وتنشيطه، والعقل كباقي أعضاء الجسم يحتاج إلى العناية والغذاء والتدريب الجيد، وكي يتمكن العقل البشري من الوصول إلى أعلى درجات نشاطه في التفكير والتحليل والنقد والاستنتاج والإبداع وحل المشاكل فإنه سيحتاج إلى التدريب على التفكير، وقد يكون هذا التدريب على شكل اكتساب مهارات ومعارف، ومن أهم المواضيع التي يجب الاهتمام بها وبناء الوعي في كل ما يتعلق بها هو التفكير الناقد.
