About
In this Specialization, you will learn some engineering principles that can be applied to structural systems everywhere: in nature, in furniture, in mechanical and aerospace systems, and in any solid object that resists a load. Together we’ll explore how structures work, why they were designed the way they were designed, how they support loads, and where forces flow through them. More specifically you will: Learn about funicular forms and how ropes and cables resist tension. Discuss how columns, arches, and anti-funicular forms resist compression. Discover how trusses, beams and walls resist loads. • Sketch the flow of forces through structures. Compare and contrast different structural forms and systems to answer a range of questions such as: Why might an engineer choose a beam over a truss? How do the dimensions of a structure affect its response? How do engineers choose forms and systems to create structures that are both elegant and functional?
Auto Summary
Discover the fascinating world of structural engineering with "The Engineering of Structures Around Us" on Coursera, a foundational course designed for those passionate about understanding how structures withstand various forces. Guided by expert instructors, this course delves into the principles behind the design and functionality of structures found in nature, furniture, mechanical systems, aerospace, and any solid object that resists a load. Throughout this Specialization, you will explore the mechanics of funicular forms, tension resistance in ropes and cables, compression resistance in columns and arches, and load resistance in trusses, beams, and walls. You will learn to sketch force flows, compare different structural systems, and understand the rationale behind choosing specific structural forms to achieve both elegance and functionality. Ideal for beginners in the science and engineering domain, this course is perfect for anyone interested in the underlying principles of structural design. While the course duration is flexible, it offers a Starter subscription plan, making it accessible for learners eager to build a strong foundation in structural engineering. Join now to enhance your knowledge and appreciation of the structures that shape our world.
